The Opportunity:
Shell, a global energy leader with a significant presence in the Gulf of Mexico, sought a unique and engaging way to connect with attendees at the iconic New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (“Jazz Fest”). The objective was to demystify their deep-sea drilling and production processes in the Gulf, offering a perspective that would typically be inaccessible to the public. Shell aimed to showcase their operational capabilities in challenging environments while simultaneously highlighting their commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
The Solution:
To bridge this gap between the onshore festival and the offshore operations, an awe-inspiring virtual reality (VR) tour was created. This immersive experience transported Jazz Fest attendees on a breathtaking journey into the Gulf of Mexico. The tour commenced with a virtual helicopter flight, soaring over the vast expanse of the Gulf and providing stunning aerial views of Shell’s offshore oil rigs. This initial segment immediately established a sense of scale and the remote nature of these operations.
The VR experience then took participants on an extraordinary descent to the bottom of the sea floor. This underwater perspective allowed attendees to witness firsthand the complex and sophisticated deep-sea drilling processes in action. Through carefully crafted visuals and narration, the tour provided key facts and insights into the technologies and procedures employed by Shell in this demanding environment. Crucially, the experience integrated information about Shell’s stringent safety protocols and the measures implemented to protect the delicate marine ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico. By visually demonstrating these practices within the VR environment, Shell effectively communicated their commitment to responsible operations.
Shell and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival:
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is an annual celebration of the unique culture and heritage of New Orleans and Louisiana.1 It draws hundreds of thousands of attendees over several days, encompassing a diverse audience interested in music, food, and cultural experiences.2 Shell has historically been a part of the Gulf Coast community and their presence at Jazz Fest provided a valuable opportunity to engage with a broad cross-section of the public.
The immersive VR tour offered a compelling and memorable way for Shell to connect with Jazz Fest attendees beyond traditional informational booths or static displays. By providing a virtual journey to a world rarely seen, Shell was able to educate and inform in an engaging and impactful manner, fostering a greater understanding of their deep-water operations and their commitment to operating safely and protecting the environment in a critical region. This innovative approach leveraged the power of VR to create a lasting impression and effectively communicate Shell’s activities in the Gulf of Mexico to a diverse and engaged audience.
